Country’s ‘Democracy Is In Crisis’

Nov. 11, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: Many of us are still in disbelief following the election and are enduring bouts of panic and feelings of doom.

It is clear that this election will bring about many unwanted and dangerous changes, but an election cannot alter truth, the truth that on January 6th, 2021, Trump attempted to overthrow our democracy and in fact was preparing to do it again had he lost this time around. Many people were seriously hurt that day, and several died, with Trump ultimately responsible for these deaths.

Following the traditional penalty for treason and our nation’s precept that no one is above the law, Trump should have been subject to a minimum of jail. Defying logic, he was instead voted into office! Trump was right when he predicted that he could shoot somebody on 5th Avenue, and few would care. Apparently, adherence and loyalty to the Constitution and to the rule of law are no longer priorities for many Americans.

Unbelievably, some have argued that the economy and inflation are more important concerns, while at the same time being blind to the fact that our economy is currently the envy of the world, that the stock market is at an all-time high, and that our country handled the Covidinduced worldwide inflation better than any other western nation-- all of this under Biden. Certainly, prices on many goods remain too high and there is a serious problem with illegal immigration, but these issues could have been corrected without overriding and destroying our government.

We are not the people we thought we were. We can no longer envision ourselves as special and elevate our country above all other nations. Our democracy is in crisis. Having few options, we can only hang on and pray that our democracy survives this ordeal.
