Nov. 18, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: We are a country of immigrants. From the First Nations that crossed into North America over a thousand years ago until the present day, it is immigrating populations, from outside of the U.S. or within the U.S, who have contributed to the development and success of the United States of America.
President-elect Trump and his allies are determined to derail this success story by demonizing and expelling immigrants starting on Day One of his new administration.
What does this mean for the U.S. economy? Jobs will go unfilled, labor will be in short supply, prices will rise and the supply of goods and services will decrease.
On the humanitarian side, families will be separated, some refugees will be stateless, and others will be exposed to violence and even death if they return to their native country.
Culturally, we will limit our access to and experience with different values, lifestyles and ways to solve problems that enrich our lives.
