It’s All About The Cats And Dogs

It’s All About The Cats And Dogs

The Rockbridge SPCA holiday season starts off with the very popular luminaries purchased and displayed in memory or honor of a pet or family member.

Volunteers and the members of the SPCA board of directors decorate, write names, fill and set out bags for display, and light hundreds of luminaries that will line the walkways at Hopkins Green for the annual Candlelight Processional and Tree Lighting on Friday, Nov. 29. This is the 29th year the SPCA has been making luminary bags for this magical event.

For more fun, don’t miss the SPCA dogs walking in the Downtown Lexington Christmas Parade, Friday, Dec. 6. Shelter dogs looking for a home will do their best to catch the eye of someone special; maybe it will be you?

Looking for ways to support the shelter? You can bring a toy, a treat, a blanket or various food items for cats or dogs to place under the SPCA Christmas tree at the Christmas open house, Saturday, Dec. 14, from 1 to 4 p.m. For a list of items needed, visit the SPCA website at www.rockbridgespca. net and click on “Support,” then on “Items we need.” Refreshments will be served.

Also, don’t let your dog, cat, lizard, bunny, horse, or any other pet miss out on a photo-op with Santa. Santa will be at the SPCA during the Christmas open house all afternoon. No appointments are necessary, and photos are $10 each.

Before taking a photo with Santa, you may want to give your dog a bath in the new and popular SPCA indoor dog wash, The Spaw! The cost is $15 per dog, and that includes everything you need to spruce up the pooch and save your back with the hydraulic lift tub. The Spaw is open Monday through Sunday 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Then it’s a happy New Year for poker players. The Rockbridge SPCA is bringing back its Texas Hold ’em poker tournament on Saturday, Jan 11, at the Virginia Horse Center. The event starts with a buffet lunch at noon, and poker begins at 1 p.m. To register or for more information, visit the SPCA website.

“And lastly, we are proud to announce that with the help of a generous gift from the late Ruth Sorrells of Buena Vista, the SPCA’s dream of opening a lowcost spay and neuter clinic is closer than ever,” said Tari Rodi, executive director. “Plans are underway to convert our rental house into a clinic, with work starting this February. Look for updates on our website and Facebook pages for more details and for ways to support our new endeavor, Rockbridge Spay and Neuter Clinic.”
