Courthouse Square Plan Praised

Letters

Nov. 21, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: I am writing to express my strong support for the proposed rehabilitation of the old courthouse grounds. This project is a rare opportunity to transform one of Lexington’s most historically significant spaces into a vibrant, welcoming area for all.

When the Virginia legislature established Lexington in 1777, it designated a “courthouse square” as a central public space for the courthouse and community. In the 1830s, renowned architect Thomas U. Walter designed the Federal-style jail and jailer’s house, leaving an open area in front to preserve sightlines and provide room for public gatherings. Although no formal plaza plan was ever developed, the open design reflects an intent to create a functional public space. This layout also ensures that the jailer’s house remains a prominent architectural feature, with enhanced sightlines from Main Street.

The proposed improvements to the old courthouse grounds will honor the original vision for this space while celebrating Walter’s architectural legacy. As one of the few green spaces on Main Street, a revitalized plaza will provide a much-needed gathering place for residents and visitors alike. It will offer a comfortable setting for relaxation, community events, and ceremonies such as memorial and Veterans Day commemorations —all while enhancing the site’s historical character.

This project is a meaningful investment in our community. It preserves our shared heritage while creating a public space that will benefit Lexington and Rockbridge County for generations to come. I strongly encourage my fellow residents to support this important effort. JEFF HUGHES Design Committee chair, Main Street Lexington
