A developer from Richmond announced that he was planning a large shopping complex to be built on U.S. 11 just north of Lexington. The center would include a Kroger, a Super-X and a Sears store. - Rockbridge County teachers who attended the Virginia Education Association meeting earlier in the fall were told they would not lose pay for the days spent attending the conference following a unanimous decision by the school board. The teachers had been initially told that they had to use person days to attend the conference.
- James Kostelni, president of the Georgia Bonded Fibers plant in Buena Vista, announced shortened work weeks for plant employees because of the economic recession “or whatever you want to call it,” he said.

A 4-year-old girl was expected to make a full recovery after being run over by a float during the Lexington Christmas parade.
