By Carolyn Bradley After two years of serving as Glasgow’s town manager, George Hayfield is heading just a little south to become the town manager of Buchanan.

He will begin his new duties on March 6. Glasgow Town Council approved his resignation at last Tuesday’s meeting.

In an interview this week, Hayfield said he will be willing to continue to help out with some of- fice duties - reports, payroll, etc. - as needed until the town’s newly hired finance officer, Donna Conner, gets more acquainted with things here. Conner, a former town employee, will be working mainly from home.

For the time being, Hayfield will be commuting to Buchanan until he can find housing there.

Hayfield, who had succeeded Eric Politt as town manager, said the town has seen major improvements in the water and sewer systems during the past two years.

There have also been more activities for the town in the form of musical concerts during the summer and Halloween events in October, all being held at the new Locher Pavilion. Contracts have been signed for four bands for this coming summer. The Rockbridge Regional Fair began being held in town two years ago, and there are plans for it to return every year in the foreseeable future. The farmer’ market has continued to see locals with produce, baked goods, craft and art items for the citizens’ shopping pleasure.

Also, there have been improvements to the concession stand at Locher Field, and there are plans to eventually build nice bathroom facilities there and at the hikers’ shelter. The Glasgow Garden Club upgraded Centennial Park across from town hall and has continued to maintain it.

The first of what is hoped to be an annual kayak race is planned for May 13 of this year.

The town has also disbursed federal American Rescue Plan Act funds to the fire department and first aid crew and the James Thompson Sr. Community Center for improvements, as well as several businesses affected by Covid.

Hayfield also noted that a new computer and printer have been purchased for the finance office in town hall.

Hayfield said his decision to leave had nothing to do with any problems or issues. He said he has enjoyed living and working in Glasgow with the staff and Council.

He said he plans to attend the music events planned in Glasgow for this summer, so town residents will continue to see him around.
