The Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to recommend that the Lexington-Rockbridge County Industrial Development Authority not allow authority-owned property on South River near Buena Vista to be used for an airfield. - The Virginia Employment Commission announced that unemployment in Rockbridge had reached 6.5 percent. - The George C. Marshall Library was officially accredited by the American Association of Museum. - The Natural Bridge ice skating rink opened for the season.

Gabriella Graziano, the 4-year-old who was run over by a float in the Lexington Christmas parade, had a visit from Santa Claus at her home near Fairfield. She was recovering well from a broken pelvis incurred in the accident.
- Filming for the movie “War of the Worlds” began on Decatur Road near Bustleburg.
