Carolyn Bradley, 540-258-2720 A large crowd was on hand for the “Bond of Family” event held at the James Thompson Sr. Community Center on Saturday afternoon. There were lots of displays, and stories told by descendants of Garland Thompson, who was enslaved at the Buffalo Forge industrial farm owned by William Weaver and D.C.E. Brady.
One participant in the program, Mary Brady, was also a descendant, a descendant of the Brady family who now lives at Buffalo Forge.
It was heartwarming to see these descendants and attendees at the program joining in an atmosphere of love and respect of each other.
The Rev. Dr. Eric Anderson, pastor of Union Baptist Church, read a poem at the beginning of the program about an old gentleman who forged his way across a river in a ravine, then built a bridge for those younger who would come after him to make their way easier. A very fitting poem for the day.
Roberta Thompson Lyle, the oldest living descendant at 93, was recognized at the event. She taught in our local school systems, served on Town Council and has been active in her church and community. --- This winter, the old saying “if you don’t like the weather, wait a minute” is very true. We have experienced cold, warm, rain, sunny days, and for some a little snow. This has not been a snow event winter – so far. I hope everyone has enjoyed your favorite kind of weather sometime during this season, but spring is coming.
At last week’s Town Council meeting, the Council accepted the resignation of Town Manager, George Hayfield, effective on March 5. This position will be advertised, as is the position of town police chief. Donna Conner has been hired as a financial staff member.
