The Velvet Case Opens Lexington Store

The Velvet Case, a Staunton-based business that specializes in antique, vintage and estate jewelry, coins and other rarities, recently opened a store in downtown Lexington at 17 Courthouse Square.

“We custom build new jewelry, perform repairs, change watch batteries and evaluate complete collections,” said owner Vanessa Pogreba. “While we do not stock new inventory, we are constantly adding to our line of vendors and have a jeweler we work with so we can order and create anything anyone can imagine or desire.”

Pogreba noted that “often, when people are deciding to liquidate their personal holdings, especially jewelry, their options are limited. They often have few options that will properly represent their holdings or pay them appropriately. We work hard to evaluate their assets and offer fair values typically eclipsing any other options available to them.

“We also have a respectful environment that treats each person and possession properly. In other situations, people can be made to feel as if they have to ‘argue’ to achieve a proper value for their item. We are consistently reviewed as being fair and properly honoring the person and the collection. We often acquire additional assets through auctions and eBay so selling assets through those avenues take percentages and the client loses a portion of their value. When selling to us we pay better than both of those options in most cases.”

The Velvet Case has had a store in Staunton since 2008. Pogreba bought the business about five years ago. The Lexington store opened in August. There are plans to open a third location next year to serve the Crozet/Charlottesville community.

Pogreba spent 25 years working as a dental hygienist at practices in Charlottesville and Fishersville before deciding to embark on a new career. “While I loved my profession I was ready for a change in life,” she said. “I’ve always been entrepreneurial, loved history and desired to run a business with my sons. This business was originally a very small business owned by family friends. When they decided to move I was able to acquire their business and intellectual property. We expanded into a larger store in Staunton and saw the need for an additional location in Lexington. We absolutely love the items we see coming in everyday and meeting the people with them.”

The Lexington store’s hours are currently Wednesdays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Two of Pogreba’s sons, Kieran and Graesen, work at the Lexington store. Kieran is the manager of the store.

The Staunton store is located at 54 Rowe Rd., Suite 102, Staunton. The Velvet Case’s email is [email protected] and the web address is www.thevelvetcase.com.
