Retired Teachers Gather For Bazaar

The Rockbridge Retired Teachers’ Association (RRTA) met at Manly Memorial Baptist Church Dec. 2 for its annual Scholarship Fund Bazaar.

Members and friends brought homemade baked goods, crafts and gifts to raise funds for two scholarships awarded to local high school graduates who are pursuing careers in education. Almost $1,000 was donated and will be added to the scholarship fund.

In a candlelight ceremony, members solemnly honored their fellow educators and employees in the combined school divisions who died since last December. “We are most thankful for their many years of service and dedication to our children and schools,” said a spokeswoman.

Abell was rung as each name was announced. Those in attendance also offered memories and accolades for each of the deceased.

Those remembered included teachers and administrators Edie Humphries, Mollie Messimer, Bill Kinzer, Debra Lucas, Lars Nolson, Karen Whaley, Francis Lynn, Jim Jones and Kenny Wright; support staff John Branham, Thelma Henson, Garneth Higgins, Joan Spangler, Jimmy Hickman, Dorothy Fitzgerald, Freddie Tomlin and Roger Higgins; and RRTA members Pricilla Jamison and Mary Ann McCall.

After the business meeting concluded, a lunch of oven-roasted turkey with gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, and apple pie was served.

The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 21, at 11 a.m. More details about future meeting locations and programs will be coming soon. The group always welcomes new members. For more information, contact Kathy Burant at [email protected].
