Jay Winston Johns of Charlottesville, founder and president of Stonewall Jackson Memorial Inc., died Dec. 23 at the University of Virginia Hospital. He was buried in the Jackson family burial plot in Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery. -A record total of 11,109 birds of 76 species was recorded during the annual bird count. - Steve Davis, former football star at Lexington High School, was headed to the Super Bowl. Davis was a substitute halfback and specialty team performer for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers were set to play the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IX Jan. 12 in New Orleans.

Local churches and humanitarian relief organizations were accepting monetary donations for the tsunami victims in southern Asia, which caused 227,898 deaths making it the deadliest natural disaster of the 21st century. - Danny and Cindy Campbell were the new owners of The Palms restaurant in downtown Lexington. The Campbells purchased the business from Wade Leslie, who had been the owner since 1985.
