Glasgow Uses ARPA Funds For Water Plant

Repairs at the water filtration plant were among the items discussed during the December meeting of Glasgow Town Council.

Town Manager Allyson Finchum noted in her report there are some very expensive repairs needed at the water plant. A total of $18,000 had been spent thus far, and another $22,000 was needed. She was given authority to use American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to offset the cost of the repairs. The ARPA funds had to be used prior to Dec. 31.

In other business, Council approved the removal of the old tall metal slide from the playground, as it is believed to be a danger to children.

During the public comment time, Jesse Nelson also spoke to Council about raising funds to upgrade the playground to include equipment for special needs children. He indicated there are a group of people willing to help with this.

Public Works reported they have been cleaning brush and trees from ditches. They also devoted one and a half days digging a ditch line and putting down straw for erosion control near the new Dollar General Market building, which opened last month. They also installed two water meters for the DG Market – one for the store the other for the irrigation system.

Door knockers are being used for citizens on the water cut-off list due to failure of payment. These give the occupants a few days warning, with opportunity to pay before the actual cut off date.

The Parks and Recreation Committee noted the committee had set up and decorated a Christmas tree at Natural Bridge State Park for its Festival of Trees. They were also collecting new toys for the town’s toy drive that were to be handed out on Dec. 19. Any remaining toys were to be sent to hurricane relief efforts.

The Farmer’s Market manager noted the compost bins were removed by the Master Gardeners who installed them. These were not utilized as they had hoped, but they will revisit the possibility of putting them back in the spring.

Finchum noted she was approached by a member of the Board of Supervisors and town resident Ronnie McDaniel about planning a craft/flea market in the spring. The Farmers’ Market manager noted that a craft event like this past year’s is already in the plans at the market, the first weekend of May.
