‘Reknit Our Social Fabric’ By Joining MLK Parade

Jan. 13, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: Jan. 20 presents a special opportunity for our community to come together in a spirit of optimism and commitment to the common good as we take to the streets of Lexington for the ninth annual Martin Luther King Day parade.

Some, still smarting from the rancorous public rhetoric of the election, may be tempted to withdraw into private life. But elections are only one small piece of what makes up a democratic society. We should remember that the divisions between our nation’s political parties do not have to translate to unpleasantness at the local level. Let’s engage in ways that can help to reknit our social fabric and rekindle our pride in American democracy.

One first step might be walking in the CARE Rockbridge Martin Luther King Jr. Community Parade, a truly local tradition celebrating the legacy of Dr. King’s work to extend the promise of the United States Constitution to all citizens. Every year, hundreds of local residents of all ages and walks of life march together down Main Street in this nonpartisan and cheer-filled event. They represent our shared commitment to sustaining an inclusive, equal, and nonviolent community. Where better than this year’s MLK parade to renew our faith in the possibility of working together toward a better, more civil America?

The parade launches at 10:30 a.m. on Monday in front of the Randolph Street United Methodist Church.

Participants are encouraged to bring signs with family friendly slogans made of crushable material. Anyone needing assistance may ride in the wheelchair-accessible van, once again provided by RATS. After the parade, the Lexington Presbyterian Church will serve hot cocoa (donated by Sweet Treats) and host a hot soup lunch in its community hall.

CARE is a non-partisan, nonprofit organization sustained by the contributions of our community members. Details and updates about the organization and its activities are at carerockbridge. org and on Facebook at @ CARERockbridge. MAMEWARREN Member of CARE Rockbridge
