Icy conditions have continued to pose dangers for Rockbridge area residents days after the winter storm of Jan. 5-6.
Fire and rescue crews responded to a call on Big Hill Road last Friday to assist one woman who had slipped on ice while walking on a path behind her house.
Rockbridge County Fire Chief Nathan Ramsey told The News-Gazette that early Friday afternoon, a husband and wife who live in the 500 block of Big Hill Road were walking along a path behind their house which they had walked before when the wife slipped on the ice and slid down a hill.
Kerrs Creek fire and rescue responded to the scene, as did Rockbridge County Fire and Rescue, several deputies with the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Department, and Lexington Fire Department, which was on standby at the scene in case a rope hauling system was needed. Crews were able to retrieve the woman, who walked back down to her house on her own with no signs of injury. She did go to the emergency room for a check-up to be sure, Ramsey said.
More snow fell on the area Friday night, and, although temperatures warmed into the 30s and even 40s early this week, icy patches continue to make walking hazardous on driveways and many sidewalks.
Another chance of rain and snow is in the forecast for this weekend, and high temperatures early next week are expected to only be in the 20s.
