Campbell Announces Reelection Bid As GA Starts

Republican Del. Ellen Campbell, beginning her third session of the General Assembly this week, announced Monday that she will be a candidate for reelection later this year.

“I am running for reelection to the 36th House [of Delegates] District to fight for better health care, our law enforcement officers, lower taxes, stronger education and a brighter future for all Virginians,” said Campbell in a press release issued by her office.

The General Assembly actually convened this past Wednesday, Jan. 8, as sched- uled, for the 2025 session, but then quickly recessed until Monday because of interrupted water service for the city of Richmond related to last week’s winter storm. Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s state of the commonwealth address to the General Assembly was also rescheduled from last Wednesday until Monday.

The governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and all 100 members of the House of Delegates are up for election this year. Campbell’s 36th District covers northern Rockbridge County, portions of Augusta County and the cities of Staunton and Waynesboro.

Also representing the Rockbridge area in the House of Delegates is Republican Del. Terry Austin, whose 37th District includes much of Rockbridge County and the cities of Buena Vista and Lexington as well as Allegany, Botetourt and Craig counties and the city of Covington. Delegates serve two-year terms while state senators are elected every four years. The state Senate’s 40 members will next be up for election in 2027.

Representing all of Rockbridge County, Buena Vista and Lexington in the state Senate is Republican Sen. Christopher Head of the Third District. In addition to the Rockbridge area, the Third District encompasses Alleghany, Botetourt and Craig counties, the cities of Staunton, Waynesboro and Covington, and parts of Augusta and Roanoke counties.

Campbell was first elected to the House of Delegates in a special election in January of 2023 to fill the seat left vacant by the death of her husband, Del. Ronnie Campbell. She was re-elected to a full twoyear term in the general election the following November.

This year’s session of the General Assembly is scheduled to last 45 days.
