Jan. 20 - The MLK Community Parade scheduled for this morning was canceled last night due to safety concerns. However, a gathering for peace is taking place at 10:30 in Hopkins Green.
Robin LeBlanc with CARE Rockbridge sent out the following message last night to announce the parade's cancellation.
"I am sad to say that we have canceled the 9th Annual CARE Rockbridge Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Parade. Law enforcement contacted me late this afternoon to express concern about the safety of walkers. I then walked the course myself. Nearly all of it was really good, but unfortunately, melting snow in the roadbed on Randolph Street was running across the street in a river several feet wide that looked likely to freeze, potentially endangering participants as they gathered for the parade in the morning. CARE President Reginald A. Early and I talked about it and decided to cancel the parade.
"I am a bit crushed, but we all know that we’re out here. We’re not alone in our attachment to Justice, Love, and Equality! Our spirit will drive us through the coming year.
"The CARE Reading in Color reading room, with a children’s book raffle and coloring pages will be still be happening from 11:30 - 1:00 in Washington and Lee’s Early-Fielding Hall, Room 109 on Washington Street. It’s adjacent to Evans Hall where Washington and Lee holds its annual MLK Birthday party for local children and their caregivers."
