Five Rockbridge County High School girls competed in the only local meet of the season for the RC indoor track and field meet, the Walt Cormack Memorial Meet on Saturday at Virginia Military Institute’s Corps Physical Training Facility.
The top performance came from freshman Ariana Mitchell, who placed eighth in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 8 inches. Mitchell had already qualified for the Class 3 state meet by clearing 5 feet in the Wildcats’ first meet of the season on Dec. 11 at Fork Union Military Academy.
Mitchell also raced in the 55-meter dash, finishing 57th in 8.24 seconds.
Leading the RC girls in the 55-meter dash was sophomore Celia Jones, placing 40th in 8.06 seconds. Freshman teammate Harper Bruno came in 90th in 9.23 seconds.
Jones placed 28th in the long jump with a leap of 14-2.5 and finished 70th in the 300-meter dash in 50.34 seconds.
Sophomore Cate Skaggs, the RC girls’ lone thrower, tied for 52nd place in the shot put with a toss of 20-4.
The RC girls raced in the 4 X 200-meter relay, but they were disqualified for breaking too early. They finished in 2:11.47, which would have been a season-best time. Team members were Jones, Bruno, Mitchell and freshman Elle Werner.
Glad to have her athletes competing locally, RC head coach Jennifer Showalter said, “It was great to have a meet atVMI.”
On Saturday, the Wildcats will travel to Fork Union Military to compete in the Fred Hardy Jr. Invitational.
Commenting on the challenges of training lately, Showalter said, “With the weather, we haven’t been able to get practices in outside, so hoping for some warmer days in the near future.”
