Rockbridge
Rockbridge County school officials shared success stories and observations of student behavior without cell phones at their joint meeting with the county Board of Supervisors last Thursday.
Students returned to school last week under a new countywide policy that restricts the use of cell phones by students, requiring them to stay off and in students’ bags for the entirety of the school day.
Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Tim Martino noted how great it was to see “chins up in the hallway, and students playing games with each other” rather than being on their phones.
Chief business officer Jason Kirby shared an anecdote from Rockbridge County High School Principal Mike Craft, who had told him that, with students conversing with each other more than ever, “it was the loudest he’d ever heard it in the cafeteria.”
Board members noted that they expect this summer to share their experiences with the new cell phone policy, along with other Virginia school divisions, with the state, as the state assesses the new cell phone standards.
