Just five days after setting a new school record in the boys’ 1000-meter run, Parry McCluer sophomore Kebryl Chandler broke that record to lead the PM indoor track and field teams at the East Coast Elite Meet on Thursday at Roanoke College’s Kerr-Cregger field house in Salem.
Chandler won the race in 2:36.42, breaking his previous record by five-hundredths of a second. The previous Saturday, he had broken the record of his older brother Kovyk, who graduated last May. In Thursday’s race, Spotswood’s Peyton Kenee placed second in 2:37.14. PM junior Josh Cooper placed 14th in 2:48.21, and junior teammate Logan Wheelock finished 17th in 2:50.51. Also competing in the 1000-meter run for the PM boys were freshmen Hinckely Lovelace (35th, 3:00.59) and Sebastian George (64th, 3:19.17).
The PM boys placed third of 16 teams in the 4 X 800meter run, finishing in 8:35.82.
In the boys’ 1600-meter run, George represented the Blues, finishing 26th in 5:27.71.
Leading the PM throwers was senior Kamilah Richardson, placing second in the girls’ shot put with a toss of 36 feet, 4.25 inches. Sophomore teammate Phoebe Woods finished 50th with a throw of 20-1.25.
Junior Griffin Harlow led the PM boys in the shot put, placing third with a personal-record toss of 51-4.25. Senior teammate Rayshan Richardson finished ninth with a statequalifying throw of 45-2.5, and PM junior Vincent Wilson came in 51st with a toss of 34-11.75.
Reviewing his throwers’ performances and looking ahead, PM throwing coach Danny Cole said, “Griffin appears to be on the mend after his injuries and had some good throws on Thursday.”
“Kamilah is continuing to show consistency and around the 36-37-foot distances, but has shown some great unofficial throws,” added Cole. “Should be interesting coming to the end of the season to see where she ends up.”
The Blues will travel to Lynchburg on Saturday to compete in the Bulldog Invitational at Liberty University, starting at 9 a.m.
