High school students are now being recruited for participation in the Rockbridge-area Envirothon, a yearly competition that challenges teens to demonstrate knowledge of environmental science and natural resource management. Envirothon is the largest environmental education competition for high school students in North America; the Rockbridge effort, now in its fourth year, is led by Boxerwood sustainability educator, Ginny Johnson, and is sponsored by the Natural Bridge Soil and Water Conservation District.
In this outdoors competition, teens advance their knowledge of wildlife, forestry, aquatics and soil by working together on hands-on activities, meeting with local experts, and solving realworld problems. The team will meet Thursdays after school at Boxerwood from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for 12 weeks, starting Feb. 13, in preparation for a regional competition in late April. Envirothon is open to all public school or homeschool students grades nine through 12, with snacks provided; there is no cost to participate.
