PM Girls Outflank Colonels, Generals

The Parry McCluer High School girls basketball team cruised to a pair of nondistrict home wins last week, routing Altavista 58-34 and rolling by William Campbell 4930.

On Monday of last week, Kayleigh Ramsey scored 22 points to guide PM to a lopsided win over Altavista. Victoria Hamilton totaled 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Blues, and Natalie Mohler racked up nine assists and six points.

Kaylee Puryear paced the Colonels (212) with 14 points and eight rebounds, and Kyra Moon added six points.

When the teams met at Altavista on Jan. 2, the Blues rallied from a 28-18 halftime deficit to win 54-40. But in last week’s rematch, PM started the game on the front foot, scoring the first seven points of the night and never relinquishing the lead.

Ramsey was on fire throughout the first half, burying five 3-pointers and tallying 17 points across the first two periods.

“She caught fire, man – caught lightning in a bottle there,” PM head coach Adam Gilbert said of the junior guard. “If we can get that kind of offensive production from her – at least her mindset; she looked like she was attacking the basket, looking to score – that just deepens our lineup.”

PM led 38-14 at the intermission, and a quick 8-0 spurt to start the third quarter – featuring six points from Hamilton – put the game even further out of reach. The Blues led by as many as 33 points (56-23) in the fourth quarter before a late 11-2 Altavista run provided the final margin.

Ramsey and Hamilton also had plenty of help – particularly in the first half, when all seven Blues who saw action got into the scoring column. For the night, Kylie Ramsey notched four points and five rebounds, while Emory Slagle contributed four points and three assists.

PM 49, WC 30

PM continued its run of Dogwood opponents with a 49-30 victory over William Campbell in Buena Vista on Thursday.

Hamilton tallied a game-high 23 points along with six rebounds, four assists and three blocks to pace the Blues. Kayleigh Ramsey added 11 points, and Slagle recorded six points and three assists.

Jordyn Wilson scored 21 points for the Generals (7-6). Arnesia Dews chipped in six points, and Cassie Townes had five rebounds.

William Campbell led 6-5 after a fastbreak bucket from Dews with 2:47 left in the first quarter. But the Blues closed the stanza with a 9-2 stretch, getting one triple from Hamilton and a pair from Slagle en route to crafting a 14-8 advantage.

Hamilton had six points in the second period, and PM outscored the Generals 10-2 in the frame to stretch the lead to 24-10 by the break. The Blues would maintain a double-digit margin throughout the second half.

Mohler chipped in four points, four rebounds and four assists. Peira Conner collected a game-high seven rebounds for PM, and Josie Martinez snared six boards.

The week provided a nice break from Pioneer District play for the Blues, who currently sit at 2-0 in the district. Gilbert hopes that seeing multiple styles of basketball will help his team as they hit the home stretch of the Pioneer schedule.

“William Campbell was a little different; they manned us up tonight, which we hadn’t seen a lot of,” the PM coach said. “It’s good to play different teams. Hopefully, that benefits us later in the season.”

PM was slated to play host to district rival Eastern Montgomery last night. The Blues will visit William Campbell on. Thursday, with the varsity game only at 6 p.m.. On Friday, they’ll return to district play at Craig County, where action begins with the junior varsity game at 5:30 p.m. The Blues will continue district action at Bath County on Tuesday at Bath County, with the varsity game only at 6 p.m.
