With eight of the 12 high school basketball games played coming down to the final possession, the 11th annual Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout gave fans all the excitement they could ask for over the weekend at Rockbridge County High School.
After surpassing the $100,000 mark last year, the event drew large crowds again this year and successfully raised more funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society.
All four local high school teams competed, as well as prestigious programs from Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina.
The RC girls opened the event with a game that took place during the school day on Friday afternoon. The Wildcats cruised to a 60-26 win over Roanoke Catholic. On Friday night, the RC boys lost 72-33 to a tough Stuart Hall team, Saturday’s action started with the Parry McCluer teams facing Gretna in games that came down the wire. The PM boys lost 67-65, and the PM girls then eked out a 42-41 win.
Rock the Ribbon founder and director Travis Patterson said the event “did not disappoint,” and he expressed his gratitude for “the volunteers, the studentathletes, the sponsors and the fans that came out and watched. Many, many people make this a success.”
