Jan. 20, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: My husband and I attended the recent MLK Jr. memorial celebration service at First Baptist Church moderated by Pastor McKinley Williams. The first thing that happened was the choir from Covington had to cancel because of the weather conditions. I don’t know any details, but Pastor Williams must have made a last minute phone call to William McCorkle, the music director and distinguished organist at Lexington Presbyterian Church, to fill in. He graciously did and accompanied the audience during the hymn singing. He also stayed perched at the organ hidden behind the lectern while the guest speaker gave his presentation.
On our way out of the church I instructed my husband to watch for me while I went to get our car up on Main Street. When I drove down, there was Mayor Frank Friedman standing outside on the sidewalk with my husband in the cold and wind and made sure my husband got safely into our car.
Two men, William McCorkle and Frank Friedman, quietly rendering service without hesitation. What examples they are to all of us. BECKY PATTON Lexington
