Jan. 23, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette Before I offer my opinion on recent Senate actions, I would like to thank The News Gazette for its civic mindedness and service to our community by publishing letters from local citizens. To give up valuable print space and incur production cost in publishing letters such as mine is a great gift to us all.
Last week Sen. Tim Kaine participated in a shameful display of taking cheap shots at the nominee for Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth. He repeatedly asked only about Mr. Hegseth’s personal troubled prior life. While there is certainly enough sadness and trouble in how he delt with those serious issues, he acknowledged his problems and has moved on. Kaine went on to prove he is nothing more than a loyal party member by demeaning Hegseth’s explanation on how renewing his faith changed his life. Never a real question, such as to how to deal with important issues, like a lack of fiscal/material audit of the Pentagon in decades?
Kaine touted during his campaign his Christan values, his missionary work. How about forgiveness? If he is so interested in morals, maybe he could answer why there is a multimilliondollar slush fund to pay off and keep quiet the legal and moral problems of his fellow congressional members?
Kaine has never been shot at, seen, or experienced war. If he really respected veterans, he might try to understand many of us veterans do not fit in society easily after doing what we had to do. And some never do.
President Biden’s selections were passed without cheap shots and personnel attacks by the Republicans. The Democrats show their lack of concern for the good of the country and lack of seriousness in their questions. DAVE CRAIG Buena Vista
