RC Boys’ Losing Skid At 11

Despite showing improvement, the Rockbridge County High School boys basketball team suffered three Valley District road losses last week and saw its losing streak extend to 11 games.

The Wildcats (1-18 overall, 0-10 district) had their best performance in a 57-50 loss to Harrisonburg on Tuesday of last week. In the teams’ previous meeting on Jan. 3 in Lexington, Harrisonburg (4-10,4-6) had won 63-43.

In the rematch, the Wildcats led by as many as seven points and were up by four in the fourth quarter, but they had seven turnovers and saw their lead slip away RC head coach Rob Winfield said his team is “just trying to figure out, all of us across the board, trying to learn how to win.”

On Thursday, the Wildcats suffered a 50-30 loss at Broadway (4-14, 3-6). It was a bit closer than the teams’ previous meeting on Dec. 17 in Lexington, when the Gobblers had won 60-35.

The Wildcats concluded the week with a 79-55 loss at Rocktown on Friday In their previous meeting on Jan. 23 in Lexington, the Raptors (6-10, 4-5) had cruised to a 79-44 win.

In the rematch, the Raptors pulled away by making a run at the start of the second half.

Rocktown’s Ayden Groden led all players with 20 points, while teammate Jayden Robison added 18 points. Bradi Ziegler led the Wildcats with 17 points.

Winfield said the Raptors are tough because “they’re athletic and they press from start to finish.”

The RC coach said the Wildcats are gradually making progress. “We’re playing better at times,” he said. “We’re just not playing four quarters. We can give you a good three quarters. I know we’re an older team, but a lot of guys are playing big minutes for the first time.”

The Wildcats were scheduled to play host to Spotswood last night and will continue district action at Turner Ashby on Friday They’ll conclude the season by facing two district rivals at home next week, on Tuesday against William Monroe and on Thursday, Feb. 13, against East Rockingham. All nights will start with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m.
