Winter Storm Warning Issued For Tuesday; MGCC Classes Canceled

Winter Storm Warning Issued For Tuesday; MGCC Classes Canceled
Ice formed in the trees in the higher elevations this morning, including along Sterrett Road in Fairfield

4 p.m. - Due to the expected winter weather, Mountain Gateway Community College announced that its campuses will be closed on Tuesday.

Monday, 3 p.m. - A winter storm warning has been issued for this area of the state as heavy mixed precipitation is expected from Tuesday morning through Wednesday morning.

Snow accumulation could reach 5 to 10 inches, with ice accumulations up to one tenth of an inch.

Snow will overspread the area Tuesday morning, with the steadiest snow expected Tuesday afternoon and evening. A light wintry mix is possible Wednesday morning into the midday, before a steadier wintry mix occurs late Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night.

Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice. Travel could be nearly impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes.

Monday morning- Because of the forecast for significant snow and ice on Tuesday and Wednesday, The News-Gazette’s deadlines for advertising will be advanced to 4 p.m. today, Monday. We anticipate that it will be difficult for our staff to get into the office tomorrow, and even more difficult to get home, so we are finishing this week’s issue of the paper tonight.

Publication online will be on the normal Wednesday morning schedule. Delivery of subscriber copies of the print paper and delivery to our store vendors will depend on the weather and may be delayed.

Thursday, 9:15 a.m. - A winter weather system brought a lot of rain overnight and into this morning, as well as some freezing rain in the higher elevations.

County schools are running on a two-hour delay this morning in anticipation of icy conditions, and BARC is reporting 106 customers in Rockbridge County without power this morning.

Today's wintry weather is apparently just a prelude to the winter weather predicted for early next week. Stay tuned.
