Sunday evening’s wintry weather created perilous road conditions for several hours in the Rockbridge area and led to three accidents on westbound Interstate 64 between the Kerrs Creek and Goshen exits.
The rain that had been falling earlier in the day turned to a wintry mix as darkness fell around 5:30 p.m.
“There for a short time, the roads became treacherous with snow and sleet [as well as] temperature and elevation changes in that area, [which] caused the road conditions to diminish rapidly,” said Rockbridge County Fire and EMS Chief Nathan Ramsey about the conditions west of Kerrs Creek.
Crews from the Kerrs Creek and Goshen fire departments, Goshen Rescue Squad, Kerrs Creek EMS and Lexington EMS, along with the sheriff’s office and state police, responded to the three accidents on I-64, he said.
Out of the three drivers, two people were taken to the hospital for medical examinations following the crashes. Ramsey noted that the victims seemed to be okay besides back pain and minor injuries that go hand-in-hand with these types of accidents. The damages and injuries were not overly concerning for emergency crews.
As quickly as the weather came, it lightened to a mere rain. The worst of the evening’s weather was over by about 7 p.m.
“While we were there, the snow and sleet turned to rain and seemed to assist in making the road conditions a little better to travel on,” Ramsey said, “… we dodged another bullet.”
