First Baptist Plans Heritage Events

First Baptist Church in Lexington will celebrate African American Heritage Month with two events in February and another in March.

This Sunday, Feb. 16, the Rev. Edward T. Burton, pastor emeritus at Sweet Union Baptist Church in Roanoke, will be the guest speaker at the 11 a.m. service.

On Sunday, Feb. 23, during the 11 a.m. service, Eric Wilson, executive director of the Rockbridge Historical Society, will be the guest speaker and Pastor McKinley Williams will preach.

The events will culminate with Heritage Day on Sunday, March 2. The Rev. George Smith, pastor of Second Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Pa., will be the guest speaker for the 11 a.m. service. A complimentary Soul Food dinner will be served immediately following the service in the downstairs fellowship hall.

First Baptist Church, organized on Sept. 22, 1867, is the oldest independent African American congregation in the city of Lexington.
