Washington and Lee University’s Hillside Terrace apartments for married students were set to be vacated and demolished in the summer. The barracks-like buildings were built to house World War II veterans and their families in 1946. - Freshman U.S. Sen. Gary Hart of Colorado was set to give a talk on the upcoming 1976 presidential election. Hart was the director of George Mc-Govern’s presidential campaign and had earlier worked on the campaigns of both John and Robert Kennedy. -A 25 percent decrease in the number of pregnant women visiting the Rockbridge County Health Department indicated a drop in area birth rates. The decrease in pregnancies was credited to the department’s family planning service.

Jeff Goldstein became owner of the Lexington Prescription Center. Norman Bowles had run the pharmacy for 33 years. - Laura Jane Wilson was named the new director of the United Way of Lexington-Rockbridge County. - The Board of Supervisors reversed a year-old decision not to fund the fireworks at the annual community Fourth of July celebration at Virginia Military Institute.
