W&L Museums Present ‘Born Of Fire’ Exhibit

The Museums at Washington and Lee University are presenting a new exhibit celebrating women ceramicists in Japan who are challenging tradition, breaking barriers and forging new techniques and methods with a clay exhibit that opened to the public on Feb. 1 and will close on April 29.

‘“Born of Fire’ is a significant exhibition for W&L because it offers the opportunity to expand the scope of our important ceramics collections by bringing our historical collection in dialogue with contemporary Asian pieces,” said Patricia Hobbs, senior curator of art.

The exhibit in Northen Auditorium is free and open to the public, with a reception and lecture by curator and scholar Jacqueline Chao on Wednesday, March 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Watson Galleries.

“Born of Fire: Contemporary Japanese Women Ceramic Artists,” organized by The Crow Museum of Asian Art of The University of Texas at Dallas, features the works of 14 remarkable living emerging and internationally established Japanese artists.

“For the first time at W&L, ‘Born of Fire’ showcases the arts and culture of both the traditional and contemporary dimensions of Japan within interconnecting spaces,” said Janet Ikeda, associate professor of Japanese.
