W&L Swimmers Defend ODAC Titles
The Washington and Lee University women’s and men’s swimming teams both won their fourth consecutive Old Dominion Athletic Conference titles last week at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.
In the four-day meet that ended on Saturday, the W&L women won their 17th ODAC title in the last 18 years, and their 34th in program history. The W&L men claimed their 10th ODAC title in program history.
The W&L women scored 908.5 points to beat runner-up Randolph-Macon College (539), while Roanoke College (478) placed third of 11 teams. The W&L men scored 833.5 points to defeat runner-up Roanoke (604.5), while Lynchburg College (559) finished third of 11 teams.
Senior Bella Tarbet was named the ODAC women’s swimmer of the meet. Tarbet won the 200-yard breaststroke and was a member of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team. W&L freshman Celia Bredehoft, who won the 1650-yard freestyle, was named the ODAC women’s rookie of the year.
Also winning for the W&L women was junior Morgan Smith, claiming the 200yard breaststroke.
The W&L men’s coaching staff was named the ODAC coaching staff of the year. Guiding the Generals are head coach Kami Gardner and assistant coaches Taylor Steele and Alex Henderson.
W&L senior Matt Fritz, who placed second in the 200-yard backstroke, was named the ODAC men’s scholar-athlete of the year.
Sophomore Leighton Chapman won the 100-yard freestyle, and he was a member of the Generals’ winning 400-yard freestyle relay team.

The Generals will play host for the Last Chance Meet on Saturday at noon at the W&L Natatorium, giving swimmers one more opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Division III championship meet, which is scheduled for March 20-23 in Greensboro, N.C.
