Feb. 14, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: We need to put aside the distractions of President Trump’s childish, tantrum acts of revenge like making himself the head of the Kennedy Center and proposing paving over the Rose Garden, as well as his absurd wishes to just “take” sovereign countries or turn the Gaza Strip into a Mara- Lago on the Mediterranean.
The real concern is more chilling – the move towards abandoning the rule of law. His administration’s decision yesterday to dismiss the well-founded bribery and other charges against the mayor of New York City in return for political help screams of third-world lawlessness. The fact that the acting U.S. attorney in New York – Danielle Sassoon – refused to do that dirty work, resulting in her resignation along with the resignation of six or more other federal prosecutors, tells you how serious this is. It is of note that Ms. Sassoon is no liberal, and that one of the others who resigned with her won two Bronze Stars in Iraq.
Even more chilling are the comments of the president and the vice president that they do not feel bound by the decisions of the courts.
With Congressmen and women cowed and too concerned with self-preservation rather than with the constitution, we are headed to dark times.
