Government Brief

Lexington

Lexington City Council voted to adopt a resolution authorizing the execution of the contract with R.L. Price for the construction of the new building for the Rockbridge Area Department of Social Services at its regular business meeting on Feb. 6. Lexington will serve as the fiscal agent for the project.

The motion passed in a unanimous 6-0 vote.

Buena Vista

Abandonment Approved

Buena Vista City Council on Feb. 6 granted a request by Jonathan R. and Rebecca H. Humphreys to abandon 125 feet of undeveloped road in the 3600 block of Locust Avenue.

The Humphreys, who live on the western side of unopened road, sought the abandonment so they could purchase the land. They want to landscape it and create a better parking area for which they would have exclusive access.

The eastern half of this portion of undeveloped Locust Avenue is adjacent to Treemont Apartments. The owner of the apartments is apparently not interested in purchasing the half of the land contiguous to its property. The owner is being asked to quit-claim it so the Humphreys can purchase it as well.

At 75 cents a square foot, the price for the abandonment of the total property to be conveyed to the Humphreys is $5,625. (125 x 60 = 7,500 x .75 = $5,625) At a public hearing on the proposed abandonment held Jan. 16, Allen Pooley, who stores equipment on the unopened road, raised objections to the abandonment. He would no longer be able to store equipment he owns there and was told he can’t purchase any portion of the property because he doesn’t own land adjacent to it.

Following a second reading Feb. 6 of an ordinance establishing the abandonment, Steve Webb made a motion to approve the ordinance that was seconded by Stanley Coffey. The motion passed 6-1, with Melvin Henson casting the lone dissenting vote.
