Winter Weather Pushes Back State Swimming And Wrestling Championships

As a result of this week’s winter storm and its aftermath across the Commonwealth, the Virginia High School League postponed all state championship events for swimming and diving, wrestling and gymnastics that were scheduled for this weekend. The VHSL said in a press release it will continue to prioritize everyone's safety and well-being.

For our local teams, the Class 3 state swim meet, which five Rockbridge County High School boys swimmers qualified for, is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, March 4, at the SwimRVA Collegiate School Aquatics Center in Richmond, starting at 8 a.m. Parry McCluer High School senior girl Olive King will compete there in the Class 1 and 2 state swim meet on Thursday, Feb. 27, starting at 8 a.m.

The state wrestling tournaments, with eight PM grapplers competing in the Class 1 tournament and five RC wrestlers in the Class 3 state tournament, have been rescheduled for Saturday, March 1. The Class 1 tournament will be at Virginia High School in Bristol, while the Class 3 tournament will be at Heritage High School in Lynchburg. The Virginia High School League Girls State Open Wrestling Championships is still scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 26 and 27, at Henrico Sports & Events Center in Glen Allen.
