By Scotty Dransfield Rockbridge County saw another round of winter weather last Wednesday and Thursday, with fast-falling snow accumulating about two inches each day. Though the totals were modest compared to the previous week’s storm — which left some areas with up to a foot of snow — road conditions were slick and hazardous for most of Wednesday and the first half of Thursday.
The snowfall complicated emergency responses, including efforts to battle a house fire in Fairfield. According to Brad Zollman of Rockbridge County Fire-Rescue, the weather did not help the situation, which included finding a second fire hydrant after the closest one was frozen over.
Minor traffic incidents occurred throughout the county, but Zollman noted that no major accidents or fatalities had been reported. While local residents appear to be adjusting to the frequent snowfall, Zollman pointed out that interstate travelers are often less prepared for winter driving conditions.
With mild weather possible in the forecast for the near future, the unpredictability of this season would still suggest caution on the roads remains key.
