The curtain closed on the Parry McCluer High School boys basketball season with an 84-60 loss to Patrick Henry-Glade Spring in the Class 1 state quarterfinals on Tuesday night at Virginia High School in Bristol.

Patrick Henry (26-3), the Region 1D champions, got out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter over the Fighting Blues and stayed ahead the rest of the game, as the Blues ended their season at 20-6 overall.

The Rebels used their size, shooting ability and athleticism to take control of the game early. The Blues went on some runs, but PH’s duo of big men, Cade and Cole Caywood, were too tough to stop. The Caywood brothers each scored 30 points, while Jeb Stewart added 10 points for the Rebels.

Sophomore guard Langston Cook led PM with 21 points, while Braedyn Houck scored 12 points. Quentin Rosser added nine points for the Blues, and Nathan Glass chipped in eight.

It was an impressive season for the Blues, who won the Pioneer District regular-season and tournament titles, going undefeated in district play, and were Region 1C runners-up to George Wythe, the team PH will face in the state semifinals on Friday.

PM’s last state tournament appearance was four years ago, when the Blues won their first state title in program history.

The Blues will miss their four seniors: Houck, Ellis Hill, Brayden Holdren and Peyton Montgomery.
