Local Wineries Score High In Governor’s Cup

The Virginia Governor’s Cup, now in its 43rd year, is one of the most stringent wine and cider competitions in the nation. The competition is hosted by the Virginia Wineries Association, in partnership with the Virginia Wine Board and the Virginia Vineyards Association.

This year, expert judges evaluated more than 600 wines from across the commonwealth, awarding 155 gold medals to 87 Virginia wineries.

Each year, the judges sample the best of Virginia to award medals and select the Governor’s Cup Case, Cider of the Year and Governor’s Cup winner.

Local wineries did well in this year’s judging. The following local wines won medals in this year’s competition.

Gold Medal winners: Ecco Adesso Vineyards, 2022 New World Cabernet Franc; Jump Mountain Vineyard, 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon; Great Valley Farm Winery, 2022 Petit Verdot; Rockbridge Vineyard & Brewery, 2019 DeChiel Cabernet Franc, and 2019 DeChiel Syrah.

Silver Medal winners: Ecco Adesso Vineyards, 2021 Primo Bianco, 2022 Old World Chardonnay; Great Valley Farm Winery, 2022 Gruner Veltliner, and 2022 Panoramic; Jump Mountain Vineyard, 2021 Borderland, and 2021 Sparkling Gruner Veltliner; Rockbridge Vineyard & Brewery, 2018 DeChiel Meritage, 2021 DeChiel Chardonnay, 2021 Traminette, and 2022 DeChiel Viognier.

Bronze medal winner: Ecco Adesso Vineyards, 2022 Old World Cabernet Franc.
