March 3, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: Last Friday, 200 people gathered in downtown Lexington to stand up for values and ideals we hold dear as Americans. Convened by several local citizens, the purpose of the rally was to provide an opportunity to bear witness to what we honor in our community, to celebrate the many freedoms that we enjoy in this nation and to declare our intention to continue upholding the values and practices upon which a strong democracy depends.
With the theme of βfor love of country,β this rally was conceived as a place where we could gather to support what matters most to us. During the rally citizens of all ages displayed signs/ valentines, sang songs, shared cookies and smiled at our neighbors. It was inspiring to see signs affirming such a wide variety of things we care about β a tangible reminder that we all have an important voice and role in the democratic process.
After the rally, many wondered whether there would be future opportunities to gather again. In light of these times, the rally conveners have committed to being present at the corner of Main and Washington for the next 10 Fridays, rain or shine, 4 to 5:30 pm. This is not a partisan gathering or a protest β all faiths, views, ages and affiliations are welcome to join us in peaceful affirmation of the institutions and values that benefit us all. If your readers are looking for a positive way to rally for what matters, we hope that they will bring a spirit of love and respect for their neighbors and join us.
