March 3, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: Daylight Saving Time begins this Sunday, March 9. This means children will have to get out of bed an hour earlier, and stand in the dark to catch their school bus. And, these same children will not want to go to bed at 10 p.m. because it would have been 9 p.m. if we hadn’t changed our clocks. If you have pets, it’s not easy changing meal times for dogs and cats; I can’t imagine what farmers go through to change meal times for their livestock!
Also, remember that wildlife follow Mother Nature’s clock; none are aware that humans’ clocks have changed. Please drive safely, and try not to kill any wildlife.
The argument for DST is that it saves on energy use, but the amount is very minimal. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine in 2020, however, said it disrupts the body’s natural rhythm.
I hate DST. How does it help children or adults to get up earlier and then stay up later? Wish Virginia would stay on Standard Time all year long, like Arizona and Hawaii. Don’t let our state (or federal) legislature make DST permanent! SUSAN WOOD Glasgow
