BV School Board OKs New Calendar, Make-up Days

The Buena Vista School Board approved two calendarrelated measures at its regular meeting Thursday, finalizing the 2025-2026 academic year schedule and making adjustments to the current school year due to recent weather-related closures.

For the 2025-2026 school year, the board adopted “Calendar A,” which was selected by a staff vote with roughly two-thirds support over “Calendar B.” This option was favored for its key features, including finishing the first semester before winter break, providing a full week off for Thanksgiving, and ensuring the school year ends before Memorial Day — an aspect that was particularly important to staff.

The Board also approved adjustments to the 2024-2025 calendar to compensate for lost instructional time from snow closures. To make up the required 15 hours, two early dismissal days — March 21 and May 29 — will now be full school days. Additionally, April 18, which was previously scheduled as a day off before Easter weekend, will also become a full school day.

While the division can apply for a waiver to forgive up to four inclement weather days, state requirements necessitate demonstrating efforts to recover lost time. The district, which typically starts the year with 1,080 banked instructional hours, must maintain at least 990 hours to meet the state minimum.
