Unable to come back from an early large deficit, the Rockbridge County High School boys basketball team suffered a 73-50 home loss to Valley District rival Broadway on Thursday night in Lexington.

High school basketball fans will have a full menu of games to watch this weekend while supporting a noble cause at the 10th annual Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout this Friday and Saturday at Rockbridge County High School.

The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) released its weekly Top 25 coaches’ poll on Tuesday of last week, and the Washington and Lee University women entered the Top 10 for the first time in program history at No. 9.

Continuing to struggle against the defensive press, the Rockbridge County High School girls basketball team suffered a 63-23 road loss to Valley District rival Broadway on Saturday afternoon.

The Lex Lax Lightning youth lacrosse program will hold Stick Saturdays at the Maury River Middle School gym for the next three Saturdays: Jan. 27, Feb. 3 and Feb. 10. This is a free opportunity for boys and girls from age 5 to 13, to learn stick skills and play lacrosse with friends.

The Rockbr idge County High School wrestling team went 4-0 in duals against Valley District rivals on Thursday at Broadway. With the victories, the Wildcats improved to 13-3 in duals this season.

Rockbridge County High School has named two experienced coaches to lead the boys lacrosse program. The county School Board on Jan. 11 approved hiring Jay Whitelock as head coach and George Ray as assistant coach. Both coaches have been involved in the local lacrosse scene for a long time.

After building a 16-point lead midway through the first half, the Virginia Military Institute men’s basketball team had to fight hard in the second half to hang on to beat Southern Conference rival The Citadel 70-63 on Saturday afternoon at Cameron Hall in Lexington.
