Lexington resident Ken Hardy earned three medals at the National Veterans Golden Age Games held May 22-24 in Des Moines, Iowa. Hardy’s best event was the long jump, which he won with a leap of 11 feet, 1 inch, setting a record for his age group. Hardy, 75, earned silver medals in both the 50-meter backstroke and the 50-meter sprint and placed sixth in the 1500-meter race walk. The NVGAG is an annual, national competition open to U.S. military veterans over the age of 55. Next year, the NVGAG will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Six Rockbridge County High School girls lacrosse were named all-state last week, following the Wildcats’ third consecutive Region 4D championship and their third consecutive trip to the Class 4 state semifinals.

Six Parry McCluer High School baseball players received all-district honors earlier this month, while two PM baseball players and five PM softball players were awarded allregion honors last week.

The Parry McCluer High School football team, under the direction of first-year head coach Jeremiah Brockenbrough (at near right, holding papers), played host for a 7-on-7 tournament last Wednesday at Camden Field in Buena Vista. The Blues were the only Class 1 school there, competing against larger schools Alleghany, James River and Staunton. Brenan Schley, who graduated from Parry McCluer High School last month, recently signed his letter of intent to play Division III football for Ferrum College.

Rockbridge County and Parry McCluer high schools recently named four graduating seniors as male and female athletes of the year, and 40 student-athletes received postseason honors – 31 from RC and nine from PM.

Parry McCluer High School girls tennis players Sadie Mays and Addisen Roberts concluded their tennis season in the Region 1C doubles semifinals last Wednesday at Auburn, a day after Roberts lost in the Region 1C singles semifinals at the same location.

Following two years as head coach of the Rockbridge County High School girls basketball and girls tennis teams, Andrew Bellairs is headed south to be closer to family.
