Ten local high school volleyball players – five from Rockbridge County and five from Parry McCluer – received all-district honors last week.

In light of the persistent dry conditions, Rockbridge County has initiated a ban on all open-air burning, effective this past Monday, Nov. 6.

Lexington City Council last Thursday unanimously approved several amendments to the city’s financial and debt policies, including some recommended by Davenport & Company, a financial advisory group based in Richmond that is helping the city plan for financing future capital projects.

A major need of teenagers is to find a group where they fit in, and this need is perhaps more challenging to fulfill for a teen who has moved from half-way around the world.

The Veterans Day ceremony in Lexington will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, in the sanctuary of the Lexington Presbyterian Church.

The Raphine Volunteer Fire Company will hold its annual Thanksgiving dinner for the community this Saturday, Nov. 11, at the firehouse starting at 5 p.m. The dinner will include turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, green beans, coleslaw, roll, assorted desserts, and ice tea, coffee or lemonade.

Rockbridge Area Habitat for Humanity will hold its annual meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at 5 p.m. at Brady Chapel at Lexington Presbyterian Church on Main Street. The public is invited to attend.

The Rockbridge County High School FFA is conducting a citrus fruit fundraiser through this Friday, Nov. 10.

On Halloween, the second-graders at Waddell Elementary School participated in The Great Pumpkin Patch Investigation. These detectives examined pumpkins using their powers of observation, math and science skills and their taste buds (to sample roasted pumpkin seeds). Organized by teacher Amanda White, and working with the Roots and Shoots Garden volunteers, the pumpkin patch investigation was a “howling” success.
