LT. COL. LARRY WEINERTH JR.

Lt. Col. Stuart Lawrence “Larry” Weinerth Jr., 89, of Buena Vista, died peacefully on Feb. 16, 2024.

Larry was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant on June 1, 1956. His specialties during his time in service were UH-1 pilot and KC-130 aircraft commander and pilot. He served in combat during the Vietnam War for which he was awarded a Bronze Star Medal, 18 Air Medal Awards, a Combat Action Ribbon and a Vietnam Service Medal among others. He retired as a lieutenant colonel on Aug. 1, 1979, after 23 years in active service.

Larry was born on Aug. 23, 1934, in Reading, Pa., to Stuart and Violet Weinerth. He graduated from Parry Mc-Cluer High School in 1952.

He attended Virginia Military Institute and graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1956 where he majored in chemistry and earned a bachelor of science degree. He then went on to earn a master of arts degree in counseling psychology in 1977.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Secrist Weinerth, in 2006.

He is survived by his sister, Nancy Armstrong (Neil) of Austin, Texas; his three children, Fred Weinerth (Bobbi) of Virginia Beach, Greg Weinerth (Debbie) of Buena Vista and Susan Niesen (Mike) of Pensacola, Fla.; six grandchildren, Michael Niesen of Pensacola, Fla., Jamie Bialas of Springfield, Mo., Hollie Martin (Terry) of Buena Vista, Gregory Weinerth (Ashley Hogan) of Lexington, Virginia Cascaes (Marcelo) of Pensacola, Fla., and Devin Weinerth (Teresa) of Warren, Ohio; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 1, at the Green Hill Mausoleum in Buena Vista.

Arrangements are being handled by Bolling, Grose, & Lotts Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
