James David Hickman, 69, of Lexington passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 23, 2024, with his wife by his side.

Born Feb. 21, 1955, in Lexington, he was the son to the late Sidney Everett Hickman and Alise Reynolds Hickman.  On Aug. 2, 1975, he married Vickie E. Plogger.  The two shared almost 49 years of marriage together. He was a dedicated husband, loving father and very proud Poppy.

Jimmy is survived by his wife, Vickie Plogger Hickman; two daughters, Cara Kinker (Thomas) and Laura Beth Walsh (Chris) of Midlothian; seven grandchildren, Davis, Brady, Grant, Anderson, Ansley Kate, Harper and Lochlan; two brothers, Tim Hickman (Mary Lee) of Arizona and Tom Hickman (Gale) of Florida; a special father-in-law, Billy Plogger of Lexington; a brother-in-law, Mark Plogger (MaryAnn) of Staunton; and six nieces an nephews.

Jimmy was a faithful member of the Lauderdale A.R. Presbyterian Church and served many years as a deacon and sang in the choir.  During his career, he worked in food industry, home improvement, and volunteered his time at the Lexington Restaurant.  He enjoyed his final 13 years working for Rockbridge County Schools providing transportation for students to and from school as well as athletic events.

Jimmy was well known for his singing talent, which was first discovered during his elementary years at Central School. Since his early 20s, his love of music highlighted the desire to share his gift with others for weddings, baptisms, church services and various community functions.  His participation in the quartet, Wonder, provided lots of enjoyment and the connections he made led to lasting friendships.

Special appreciation to the staff at Davita Dialysis Center and Carilion Home Health for their care and support.

A Celebration of Life was conducted Friday, April 26, at the Lauderdale A.R. Presbyterian Church (300 South Main Street, Lexington) by the Rev. Benjamin Dowling III.
