Katherine "Kitty" Gertrude Tyree

Katherine “Kitty” Gertrude Tyree, 91, entered the eternal gates of Heaven on Friday, Feb. 3, after a short battle with cancer.

Born March 17, 1931, in Rockbridge County, she was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse Templeton Weeks and Olieta Kemp Weeks; her loving husband, Calvin Tyree; a brother, Jackie Weeks; two sisters, Aurelia Heslep and Agnes Weeks; and a brother-in-law, Paul Heslep.

Kitty is survived by her former sister-in-law, Linda L. Weeks; three nephews, Larry T. Heslep, Joe T. (Timmy) Heslep and William T. (Billy) Weeks; a niece, Lori A. Bare (Booper); numerous great nieces and nephews, as well as several great-great nephews and one great-great niece.

Katherine, lovingly known as Kitty, was a graduate of Fairfield High School. She lived several places after marrying Calvin, but they made their home on Thurston Drive in Crozet. Kitty held devout Christian beliefs and she made it a priority to travel back to Rockbridge County weekly to enjoy Sunday services at Fairfield Presbyterian Church, a place she dearly loved. Kitty and Calvin were members of the Race Goers club, and traveled to many NASCAR races with other couples. In her later years, Kitty could also be found in the grandstands at dirt tracks across Virginia, watching her great-nephew, Tyler. She was an avid UVA basketball fan, attending many games over the years. After her cancer diagnosis, she even made it a point to find out who had been winning the games!

Kitty was extremely independent, and spent much of her leisure time outdoors. She kept a garden for many years, and loved flowers. Until the fall of last year, she could be found out back mowing her acreage on a zero-turn lawn mower. Additionally, she volunteered with the Pink Ladies. Nothing was as important to Kitty as family. She made the trek over Afton Mountain for hair appointments, birthdays, graduations, weddings, and other celebrations – very rarely missing anything.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2023, at Fairfield Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Punker Robertson. Burial will be at Fairfield Cemetery.  Family will receive friends one hour before service in the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Kitty’s name to the Fairfield Presbyterian Church.

Arrangements by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory.
