Nicki A. Miller died Nov. 28

 

Nicki A. Miller died on Nov. 28, 2022. She was born March 12, 1955, in Erie, Pa., to the late Marian E. (Waldinger) Miller and Ernest R Miller.

Nicki was predeceased by her husband, Kent Rattan, and is survived by her children Sean Porterfield of Woodsboro, Md., Julia Porterfield of Baltimore, Md., Elizabeth Rattan of Philadelphia, Pa., and Claire Rattan of Staunton.

Also surviving is her brother Richard Miller (Deborah); brother-in-law Ron (Pam) Rattan, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was a graduate of Villa Maria Academy in Erie, Pa., and attended Endicott College and the University of Kentucky. Living over 20 years in the D.C. Metro area, she was a poetry slammaster for the D.C. and Baltimore national slam venues. Nicki worked as the program coordinator for the Master of Creative Writing and Master of Literature Programs at American University in Washington, D.C.

The family relocated to Texas in 2005 where she joined the Friday Morning Knitting Group. After retiring in 2011 and moving to the Shenandoah Valley, she became a member of WINKS, the Wednesday Night Knitting Society in Lexington. She also loved to travel by ship.

Her ashes will be scattered at a private event with family and friends this spring.

Memorials can be made to the Cave Canem Foundation or the Cremation Society of Virginia (Richmond).
