EDGAR “BUD” BARE
EDGAR “BUD” BARE
Mr. Bare, a native of Lexington, moved to Maryland in 1956 to work for the C&P Telephone Company. Mr. Bare spent most of his career managing operator services, eventually becoming the head of operator services of the four states of the Mid-Atlantic region. He was most proud of his management of the decline of the operator staff because there were no layoffs. He retired as a general manager at the same level as vice president in December 1992.
Bud, a veteran of the Army from 1954 to 1956, served at Fort Lewis, Wash. Bud led an Army group on a winter expedition to install a temporary Bailey bridge over the Nisqually River on the side of Mt. Rainier. He was a proud Virginia Military Institute graduate in civil engineering in 1954 and earned his master of art from Johns Hopkins in 1970.
He cherished time spent with family, playing tennis, engaging in bridge games, solving crossword puzzles and relaxing at the beach.
Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Jacqueline Sloan Bare; his son, Brian K (Susan) Bare; daughters Katherine S. (Clay) Beggerly, Pamella D. (Robert) Shaw, Betsy F. (Richard) Doney and Alice W. Shaff; along with 10 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Bare, and niece April Conti, and two grand-nieces.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mae Dixon Bare; father, Adam Bare; and sister, Brenda G Bare.
A celebration of life will be on Tuesday, June 25, at 1 p.m. at the Riderwood Senior Living Chapel, 3110 Gracefield Road, Silver Spring, Md.
A member of the United Methodist Church, Bud’s life was marked by generosity, supporting various charities.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests greetings with a warm smile to honor Bud’s memory.
