MARGARET CRAIGHILL
MARGARET CRAIGHILL
Margaret was born and grew up in South Boston, the daughter of Joseph Stebbins Lawson and Elizabeth Lawson.
She had two siblings, an older sister, Mary Lawson Hodges, and a younger brother, Joseph S. Lawson Jr., who both predeceased her.
She graduated from Mary Baldwin College in Staunton and returned to South Boston where she was an elementary school teacher. In late 1951, she went on a blind date with Lloyd L. Craighill from Leesburg, and on May 2, 1953, they were married in South Boston. “Marg” and Lloyd were happily married for 68 years until Lloyd passed away on Sept. 14, 2021.
Margaret is survived by her three sons, Lang (Wilmington, N.C.), Laird (Rockbridge Baths) and Peyton (Richmond). She also has five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren spread out from Massachusetts to Utah to North Carolina. Despite the distances involved, the whole family would gather yearly at various North Carolina beaches in the summer and again in Lexington for Christmas.
After retiring, Marg and Lloyd moved from Richmond to Lexington where they lived in retirement bliss for almost 40 years. They owned two beautiful houses in Rockbridge Baths for several decades before moving to Kendal of Lexington.
Among Margaret’s passions were gardening, reading, arts, and going for walks. Until late in her life she had both flower and vegetable gardens which tended to get larger every year to the consternation of Lloyd.
Perhaps more than anything outside of family and friends, Margaret loved to travel. She and Lloyd traveled to over 70 countries and made dozens of close friends during their travels. Her favorite travel places included Turkey, Croatia, Scotland, and the Rhine River area of Germany and France.
Margaret had a wonderful life, full of family and friends, and she maintained her sense of humor until her final days. She and Lloyd adored each other and after 68 years together on earth, they will spend eternity in Heaven.
The family will hold a private funeral service.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers or other remembrances, contributions be made to the Fellowship Fund of Kendal at Lexington. NG
