Carl Vinson Hinkle Jr., 81, husband of Barbara (Rawley) Hinkle of Staunton, went to his heavenly home on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2024.
Mr. Hinkle was born on Aug. 21, 1942, to the late Rev. Carl Hinkle, Sr. and Isabel Mohn Hinkle in Chambersburg, Pa.
Carl was a graduate of North River High School in Mt Solon. He then graduated from Virginia Military Institute and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the Army and served in Korea. Carl received his doctorate in mathematics from ClemsonUniversity and went on to become a professor at Clemson University, VMI and Liberty College. Carl served in the army reserves and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After teaching, Carl started a new trade and became a Master Plumber, opening his own business known as Rockbridge Area Construction Support. He assisted with Habitat for Humanity houses in Rockbridge and Rockingham Counties. Carl attended Community Fellowship Church in Staunton and was an active member of Gideons International. Carl visited Israel three times with Comfort My People through Advancing Native Missions in Afton. He also went to the Ukraine on a mission trip to an orphanage with his grandson. Carl was a lay minister who never turned down an invitation to speak about his Savior. His greatest joy was to share his faith in Jesus Christ with his family and everyone he met.
Surviving in addition to his loving wife of 58 years, whom he married on Christmas Eve 1965, are two sons, Vince Hinkle (Beth) of Staunton and Darren Hinkle (Stephanie) of Waynesboro; two daughters, Kristen Brown (Wayne) of Richmond and Janla Hinkle-Cline (Scott) of Staunton; seven grandchildren, October Edwards, Jeremiah Seth Brown, Josie Brown, Kaitlyn Cline, Haley Cline, Austin Cline and Jaiden Hinkle. Siblings include brother, Gary Hinkle (Bonnie) of Florida and sisters Gloria Hayes of Craigsville and Judy Simmons (Donnie) of Florida; sister-in-law Nancy Whitt (Dave) of Aylett; brothers-in-law, Steve Rawley (Ruby) of Mt. Solon and Dennis Rawley (Angie) of Staunton; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sept. 7, 2024, at Memorial Baptist Church in Staunton at 2 p.m.
